regions (Dobzhansky 1950, MacArthur 1969, Schemske 2002, Schemske et al. 2009). A priori, one might indeed expect that species with broad niches inhabit temperate environments, as lower productivity and more seasonal and inter-annual fl uctuations in climate and resources should select for morphological, physiological and behavioral traits that allow foraging on a broad range of food types (Waser et al. 1996, Dynesius and Jansson 2000, Dalsgaard et al. 2011, 2013, Rech et al. 2016). However, it remains debated whether biotic specialization in fact decreases toward temperate regions. Ecography 40: 001–007, 2017 doi: 10.1111/ecog.02604 © 2016 Th e Authors. Food plant diversity as broad-scale determinant of avian frugivore richness.
The causes of variation in animal species richness at large spatial scales are intensively debated. Here, we examine whether the diversity of food plants, contemporary climate and energy, or habitat heterogeneity determine species richness patterns of avian frugivores across sub-Saharan Africa. Path models indicate that species richness of Ficus (their fruits being one of the major food resourc...
متن کاملTemporal changes in the structure of a plant-frugivore network are influenced by bird migration and fruit availability
Background. Ecological communities are dynamic collections whose composition and structure change over time, making up complex interspecific interaction networks. Mutualistic plant-animal networks can be approached through complex network analysis; these networks are characterized by a nested structure consisting of a core of generalist species, which endows the network with stability and robus...
متن کاملStability and generalization in seed dispersal networks: a case study of frugivorous fish in Neotropical wetlands.
When species within guilds perform similar ecological roles, functional redundancy can buffer ecosystems against species loss. Using data on the frequency of interactions between fish and fruit, we assessed whether co-occurring frugivores provide redundant seed dispersal services in three species-rich Neotropical wetlands. Our study revealed that frugivorous fishes have generalized diets; howev...
متن کاملHabitat Characteristics of Forest Fragments Determine Specialisation of Plant-Frugivore Networks in a Mosaic Forest Landscape
Plant-frugivore networks play a key role in the regeneration of sub-tropical forest ecosystems. However, information about the impact of habitat characteristics on plant-frugivore networks in fragmented forests is scarce. We investigated the importance of fruit abundance, fruiting plant species richness and canopy cover within habitat fragments for the structure and robustness of plant-frugivor...
متن کاملAsymmetries in specialization in ant-plant mutualistic networks.
Mutualistic networks involving plants and their pollinators or frugivores have been shown recently to exhibit a particular asymmetrical organization of interactions among species called nestedness: a core of reciprocal generalists accompanied by specialist species that interact almost exclusively with generalists. This structure contrasts with compartmentalized assemblage structures that have b...
